Story of the Holy Quran.

Why is the Holy Quran arranged that way? On what basis? why do we find some MAdani verses among other Makki verses all in the same chapter?

all these questions run in our heads, in searching for the answers we found it lying in the story of this religion itself.

Let's hold the story from beginning:

Bismillah Arrahman Arrahim:

2:106 Nothing of our revelation (even a single verse) do we abrogate or cause be forgotten, but we bring (in place) one better or the like thereof. Knowest thou not that Allah is Able to do all things ?

107 Knowest thou not that it is Allah unto Whom belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth; and ye have not, beside Allah, any guardian or helper ?

108 Or would ye question your messenger as Moses was questioned aforetime ? He who chooseth disbelief instead of faith, verily he hath gone astray from a plain road.

Deep in history, the moment came when Allah destined the rise of the last prophet on this earth. This prophet was already known by description to the former nations who received revelations: Jews and Christians (Ahlul-Kitab).
Sooner Prophet Muhammad -salla Allahu alihi wa sallam/may peace be upon him- turned 40, and received his 1st revelation - in the cave of Hiraa- Iqraa! (Recite!)
These were the 1st verses that fell from the Lawhul-Mahfouz to earth… HOLD ON! WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

The Preserved Book, or the Lawhul-Mahfouz is the book which included Allah's words of the Quran, it was there in heaven long before the appearance of Prophet Muhammad, it may have existed even before earth, only Allah knows how old His words are.

It was preserved, awaiting for the right moment. When it finally came, Angel Gibril took it to let fall to the 1st heaven all at once, to then take from it the right verses at the convenient time to deliver them to Prophet Muhammad. This explains why sometimes the Quran says Anzala (to let fall at once) and Nazzala (to let fall part by part).

Here we are, Prophet Muhammad got frightened and ran home fast, sweating of fear, shivering and asking for coverage. Lady Khadija offered him tranquillity; he received more verses again.

He went to Waraqa, the cousin of Lady Khadija and knew for the 1st time his true destiny.. he is the last prophet and he will be expelled out of his homeland and his property.

Subhanallah, although the revelation was heavy, really heavy, that his body always shivered and sweated like being under shower- yet he felt in peace with it. The revelations continued for sometime then cut off!
A feel of fear, a feel of depression and restlessness made prophet Muhammad feel the greatest sorrow till that he tried once to fall dead from a mount but saw angel Gibril appearing to him saying: O' Muhammad, believe you're Allah's messenger honestly and really, so he stepped back and went home with some tranquility.

After such a period that passed like years heavy and slow, the revelation continued again…..
For every issue that might confuse Muslims; Angel Gibril would deliver the verses that have the solution.

In Makkah, the main concern was fortifying the faith of new Muslims and helping them form the true basis of belief or aqeeda; talking about heavens and earth, about Allah's miracles in the universe, about the Jannah and Hell.
On go the verses of the Holy Quran in the Makkan period which lasted 13 years so that you find nearly 2/3 of the Holy Quran deals with just faith and correct belief. This is indeed the core of religion.

Then the Hijra, the big issue that reformed to future of Daawah (preaching) made a new guideline for the Quran verse. Now faith has been corrected, but still the form of worship hasn't completed yet.

Before Hijrah, Muslims were scattered collections of people, but after Hijrah they are now a nation. Before Hijrah there were Muslims and Kafirs but after Hijrah another category arose, the Munafiqs/hypocrites.
Was this a bad sign? No! in fact it was a healthy sign. The presence of hypocrites means there is a strong regime that people found need to apparently show harmony with just to save their profits, and only the strong would have hypocrites around, but the weak would be directly faced.

What did this new society need?
It needed to know how to deal with other nations: Kafirs, Ahlul-Kitab & Munafiqs.
It needed to know how to deal with crime, how to arrange financial situation, the inheritance and the gains from wars and how should they be divided and so on. This part of the Holy Quran containing what we call now "Fiqh" has been revealed in Madina.

During that, some revelations were destined to be no more included in the Holy Quran, so they were excluded from the last version of the Quran, how?.. just read till the end..

In every Ramadan, Angel Gibril used to have a meeting with prophet Muhammad to revise the Holy Quran once with him, only till the last year of his death my peace be upon him angel Gibril revised it twice, then Prophet Muhammad taught Zaid ibn Thabit this last revelation, this is why he was the leader of the collection of the Holy Quran at the time of Abi Bakr-may Allah be pleased with him. He was young and had excellent remembering powers that he learned the Hebrew language in just 18 days! And this was to write the Prophet's letters to Jews.

3:7 He it is Who hath revealed unto thee (Muhammad) the Scripture wherein are clear revelations - they are the substance of the Book - and others (which are) allegorical. But those in whose hearts is doubt pursue, forsooth, that which is allegorical seeking (to cause) dissension by seeking to explain it. None knoweth its explanation save Allah. And those who are of sound instruction say: We believe therein; the whole is from our Lord; but only men of understanding really heed.

Now when a new verse would fall, prophet Muhammad would say: put this verse in Surah X beside the verse Y, so the arrangement is "Tawqifi" or constant, means can't be changed and it was kept the way prophet Muhammad dictated, according to what he learned from Angel Gibril.

The revision each Ramadan would tell the verses that have been added and those which have been erased.. some verses have been removed but still their laws existed in Shariaa like the Rajm of Zinaa (stoning of the prostitutes) others were erased both recitation and laws, and some remained to be recited while laws invalid like the period of mourning for a dead husband which was at 1st a whole year then reduced to 4 months and 40 days.

Prophet Muhammad gave permission for Muslims to write the Holy Quran, so they had it written in bones, leather, wood.. etc including the erased verses, that's why we now have them especially from the papers of Ibn Masoud yet we know they are not included but they greatly help to understand some of the existing verses and draw a speculation of the circumstances surrounding the flow of events that time.

Now we came to the end. The determinant of the full version was the last revision that took place in the last Ramadan, 5 months before the prophet's death.

Does the Holy Quran include the process of its own arrangement? No, but we knew the flow of the process from what the Sahaba told us, they told that when a certain verse would fall, prophet Muhammad would say: put this besides verse Y in Sura X, name this chapter sura X.. and so on.

The version we have now is that same one arranged short before prophet Muhammad's death.

The core of the Holy Quran lies in Surah: Fatiha, it's the Sabbul-Mathani (the 7  oft-repeated verses) arries the reason of our existence, included praise to Allah and confession He's the supreme Lord of the whole universe, and ended with a Duaa/prayer that Allah will guide us to the straight path, the path of Huda, the path of those who received Allah's grace, may Allah make us among them, Ameen.
